In October 2016, I was promoted to graphic designer at the department I work in at UAB. Shortly after, I was in a meeting about the strategic wall chart that I was designing and our Vice President looked me in the eye and said he wanted me to listen to this next part because it was directly related to my area. He said our content was static and flat and that by 2019 he expected our content to be dynamic. That night, I started researching what was trending in dynamic content and how I could bring our work to life. This was the next project that I worked on and I created it in MS Powerpoint.
Since then, I’ve been put on a lot of video projects. I didn’t even open Adobe AfterEffects until last fall and now I have developed a process for setting up designs in Adobe Illustrator and setting up the files in AfterEffects for myself or anyone on our team to animate. I also had only ever recorded live video on my phone and even then it was just clips of things here and there and now I’m the person in our department who does the filming, editing and audio for our video work. It’s amazing what a year of hard work and pushing yourself can do for your skill set. I would never call myself an animator but I’m proud of how far I have come and am really loving to expand myself on these projects.
I project manage all of our videos, including at least the initial storyboarding and research for each video. Our team has grown quite a bit since I joined, with students and a contract animator. We work collaboratively on a lot of the projects and that has been so helpful the past few months. It’s so awesome to work with other creative people and brainstorm ideas and feed off one another’s ideas. I’ve been able to take on more of a leadership role in the team and help develop people’s skills and potential. I’m loving it!
These videos are the ones that I did most if not all of the creative work on over the past year, we have more work on our department’s YouTube channel.
